Overview:
The Structural Design Review Specialist is responsible for reviewing and approving structural designs in large-scale construction projects. This role ensures that all structural designs meet local and international building codes, project specifications, and safety standards. The specialist collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, providing technical expertise and feedback to optimize structural efficiency, safety, and compliance with regulations.
Responsibilities:
Structural Design Review and Approval:
Review and approve structural designs submitted by consultants, ensuring they comply with project specifications, local building codes, and international structural engineering standards.
Assess structural designs for feasibility, including load calculations, material specifications, and structural integrity under various conditions.
Ensure structural designs meet safety, stability, and sustainability standards, maintaining project goals for cost-effectiveness and safety.
Provide feedback on designs to improve structural efficiency, material usage, and ease of construction.
Coordination with Design Teams:
Collaborate with architects, MEP engineers, and other design disciplines to ensure structural systems are integrated into the overall project design.
Facilitate coordination between structural and architectural designs, ensuring that structural solutions align with aesthetic and functional requirements.
Quality Control and Compliance:
Implement quality control measures to ensure all structural designs meet project requirements, building codes, and engineering best practices.
Conduct detailed compliance reviews of structural designs, ensuring adherence to local regulations, zoning laws, and international standards.
Technical Problem Solving:
Address and resolve structural design challenges during the review process, ensuring that designs remain compliant and feasible while maintaining project objectives.
Provide technical expertise to solve complex structural issues and ensure designs meet regulatory and project-specific needs.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain detailed records of design reviews, including structural design approvals, revisions, and recommendations.
Ensure all structural design documentation is properly updated, catalogued, and accessible for audits and regulatory inspections.
Client and Stakeholder Engagement:
Serve as the primary point of contact for structural design queries from clients, ensuring their vision is reflected in the final design while maintaining safety and structural integrity.
Participate in design review meetings with clients, project teams, and stakeholders to discuss design progress and resolve issues related to structural components.
Competency Requirements:
Extensive experience in structural design review for large-scale construction projects, with strong knowledge of structural engineering principles and best practices.
In-depth knowledge of building materials, load-bearing structures, and relevant structural analysis software.
Expertise in reviewing structural designs for compliance with local and international codes, such as IBC, Eurocodes, or similar standards.
Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to provide clear, actionable feedback to design teams.
Minimum Requirements:
Education:
BSc Holders: Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or Building Services Engineering from a recognized Western-accredited university, with over 15 years of relevant experience.
MSc Holders: Master's degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or Building Services Engineering from a recognized Western-accredited university with over 12 years of relevant experience.
Professional Membership:
Chartered membership in a recognized institution (e.g., ICE, ASCE, or equivalent).
Experience:
10-15 years of experience in structural design review and analysis, with at least 5 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
Language Skills:
Fluency in English is mandatory; proficiency in Arabic is an asset.
Other Skills:
Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and listening), with the ability to interact effectively with project stakeholders and multidisciplinary design teams.
Strong problem-solving abilities, ensuring that structural designs are safe, compliant, and optimized for construction.
