The Assistant Teacher in Special Needs supports the Special Education Teacher in providing a nurturing and effective educational environment for students with special needs. This role involves assisting in the implementation of individualized education plans (IEPs), delivering tailored instruction, and ensuring the safety and well-being of all students.
The Assistant Teacher's role includes the following responsibilities:
• Assist in the delivery of individualized and group instruction as outlined in students' IEPs.
• Support students in understanding and completing classroom assignments and activities.
• Utilize a variety of instructional techniques and learning strategies to meet the diverse needs of students.
• Assist in managing classroom behavior and implementing behavioral intervention plans.
• Provide positive reinforcement and support to help students develop appropriate social and behavioral skills.
• Monitor and document students' progress and behavior.
• Help create and maintain a safe, clean, and organized classroom environment conducive to learning.
• Prepare and arrange materials and resources for lessons and activities.
• Support the integration of technology and adaptive equipment in the classroom.
• Assist in the development and implementation of IEPs.
• Collaborate with the Special Education Teacher to monitor and assess student progress.
• Maintain accurate and timely records of student performance and progress.
• Work closely with the Special Education Teacher, therapists, and other educational staff.
• Communicate regularly with parents and guardians to provide updates on student progress and address any concerns.
• Participate in team meetings, professional development sessions, and training programs.
• Provide personal care and assistance to students with special needs as required.
• Assist students during transitions, meal times, and other school activities.
• Foster a positive and inclusive classroom culture that promotes students' self-esteem and confidence.
Required Qualifications/Skills/Experience:
The Dibber Way forms the basis for attitudes and values required from the Assistant Teacher.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree or higher in Special Education, Child Development, or a related field preferred.
• Previous experience working with children with special needs in an educational setting is highly desirable.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in working with children with special needs.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
• Flexibility and adaptability in responding to the varying needs of students.
• Basic knowledge of special education practices and principles.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
• Physical stamina to actively engage with students throughout the day.
