Job Description

The Department of Chemistry at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) is seeking applications for a full-time research assistant to investigate the production of novel biopolymer-based bio-aerogels against biofilm producing bacteria. The successful candidate will be offered a two years position in a research project supported by a UAEU research council. The candidate will be involved in a project investigating the production of biopolymers by bacteria and enzymes. Synthesis and optimization of aerogels production using a variety of biomaterials, detailed characterization of aerogels by advanced physiochemical characterization techniques like IR spectroscopy, XRD, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UV-visible spectroscopy, SEM, XPS, tensile strength, rheometric analysis, etc. Loading of gels with bioactive compounds and evaluation of their antibiofilm characteristics in vitro and in vivo food models. The goal of the project is to exploit the unique nature of biopolymers to modify and load with bioactive compounds, evaluating the probability of producing novel aerogels with antibiofilm properties for industrial applications. Microbiology and enzymology techniques coupled with physical techniques like XRD, FTIR, TGA, and NMR to characterize aerogels and different assays for antibiofilm characteristics will be used in the project.



Minimum Qualification



Highly self-motivated candidates with Masters or a fresh PhD degree in Biochemistry/Biotechnology with a strong academic track record and relevant experience in microbiology (microbial cell culturing, antimicrobial activity techniques including MIC, antioxidant activity techniques, antibiofilm assays, DNA extraction and electrophoresis), hydro/aerogel synthesis and their characterization are encouraged to apply. Practical experience with XRD, IR, TGA, and NMR would be advantageous.



Preferred Qualification



A fresh PhD degree in Biochemistry/Biotechnology.



Expected Skills



Candidates with experience in microbial cell culture, biopolymer purification techniques, antimicrobial and antioxidant assays, ROS analysis, TLC, aerogel/hydrogels production techniques and their analysis are required. Candidates having experience in XRD, FTIR, TGA, and antibiofilm assays will be preferred.
