KU is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to work on a funded project to investigate the development of novel biomedical composites intended to provide the foundation for next generation implants that seek to mimic the properties and behavior of native human tissue. The project will specifically focus on combining hydrogels and architected additively manufactured polymer scaffolds to produce an interpenetrating phase composite with mechanical and tribological properties comparable to that of human articular cartilage. The project will first involve developing and manufacturing the composite by infiltrating an architected polymer scaffold with hydrogels using a suitable hydrogel polymerization technique. This step will involve defining, refining, and optimizing the composite fabrication procedure. After successfully manufacturing the composite, the main goal will then be determining the optimal material ratios, scaffold design/dimensions, and hydrogel polymerization degree to obtain a mechanically and tribologically functional composite.Further work will focus on comparing different material combinations (polymers-hydrogels) and scaffold architectures to determine best candidate for implant applications. As part of the project, the researcher will have access to state-of-the-art research equipment and facilities at the CENTER NAME (URL) and will get an opportunity to work alongside researchers and graduate students from various backgrounds as part of a wider team.Position Requirements
Support faculty to conduct research of the development of novel biomedical interpenetrating phase composite for human articular cartilage replacement
Develop in conjunction with other research staff a repeatable and reliable procedure for combining the polymer and hydrogel phases into an interpenetrating phase composite
Provide input on the possible designs and material combinations for the interpenetrating phase composite
Implement basic knowledge in CAD, and additive manufacturing software/hardware to manufacture architected polymeric scaffolds with different variable parameters (e.g.: relative density, cell size, etc.)
Acquire and apply basic knowledge on interpenetrating phase composite manufacturing methods, mechanical characterization techniques (UTM, DMA, tribology testing methods), material testing (DSC, TGA), chemical testing (FTIR), and microscopy (optical, SEM)
Operational knowledge of lab methods, safety protocols, and standard operating procedures
Adhere to the University\'s information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly
