Job Description

The Research Analyst (RA) reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR) with accountability for producing high quality research under the VCRs research portfolio, thereby contributing to the academic and research mission of the University. The RA is accountable for undertaking original research in the areas defined by the VCR, assessing and developing new research opportunities and managing selected elements of the VCR\'s research portfolio on a day-to-day basis. The RA also may, from time to time, supervise students and other researchers in their research activities as requested by the VCR.Job ResponsibilitiesOperational
  • Research Leadership: Lead and manage research projects, particularly those focused on energy sociotechnical systems, including project planning, budgeting, and resource allocation.
  • Research Design and Execution: Design and execute research studies, experiments, and data analyses to investigate the technical, economic, and policy aspects of energy transition, particularly those related to industrial decarbonization.
  • Collaboration and Partnerships: Foster and maintain strong relationships with industry partners, government agencies, and other stakeholders to identify research needs, share knowledge. Propose and develop collaborative research projects.
  • Grant Writing and Fundraising: Develop and write grant proposals to secure funding for research projects from government agencies and industrial sponsors.
  • Research Dissemination: Publish research findings in top-tier, peer-reviewed academic journals, present at conferences, and engage in public outreach and education to share knowledge and promote the finding of research conducted.
  • Institutional Support: Publish research findings in position papers, policy briefs, technical reports and related formats, with the aim of providing industrial and government stakeholders with timely and actionable policy guidance.
  • Research Trend Monitoring: Identify and monitor topics and technologies of interest, relevant trends and early-stage explorations regarding energy transition topics, particularly related to industrial decarbonization.
  • Strategic Planning: Contribute to the development of the university\'s research strategy and priorities, identifying opportunities for growth and collaboration.
Supervisory
  • Supervise, train and mentor junior researchers and graduate students, providing guidance on research methods, data analysis, and scientific communication.
  • Recommend, as needed and appropriate, needed training courses for subordinates as per the pre-determined training needs, evaluate their effectiveness, and monitor results.
  • Carry out performance appraisals for subordinates according to planned schedules and recommend necessary actions as per university policies.
  • Conduct periodic meetings with subordinates to ensure that priorities are clear and workflows are running smoothly.
  • Follow-up on subordinates\' administrative matters, including absences and annual leaves.
Qualifications, Skills and Competencies Required
  • A Ph.D. or equivalent in a science, engineering or business discipline. An MSc degree with proven track record of impactful research may also be considered.
  • A minimum of 5 years of research experience with a track record of securing research funding and publishing research in top-tier, peer-reviewed journals. A significant depth of expertise in energy sociotechnical systems is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with expertise in statistics, data analysis, modeling, and simulation, mixed methods research and use of social science research tools.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated capability in systematic and critical analysis of research publications.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with stakeholders from diverse cultures and to support team building, partnering and communications.
  • Technical knowledge of energy-related industrial processes, technology value chains, and cross-cutting technologies.
  • Experience in public policy, particularly policy design, with demonstrated understanding of implications for societal impact.
  • Strong project management skills and attention to detail with the demonstrated ability to develop, scale, and advance multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Experience in researching and preparing reports and presentations.
  • Adaptability and openness to change as work programs evolve.
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office tools, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Expertise with research management tools, including Zotero or EndNote, NVivo and statistics software packages.
