Job Description

Nurse Duties in a Dental Setting:

1. Pre-Appointment Preparation:

- Take patient medical history, including allergies and medications.

- Prepare the treatment room and ensure all necessary instruments and equipment are sterilized and ready.

- Explain procedures to patients to alleviate anxiety.

2. Assisting the Dentist:

- Assist during dental procedures (e.g., passing instruments, suctioning, holding instruments).

- Administer local anesthetics or sedation under the dentist's supervision.

- Take and process X-rays (if trained and certified).

3. Patient Care and Comfort:

- Monitor patients' vital signs during dental procedures.

- Provide post-operative instructions, including care of the site, pain management, and signs of complications.

- Assist with the management of dental emergencies, such as managing bleeding or allergic reactions.

4. Sterilization and Infection Control:

- Ensure all instruments are properly sterilized according to protocols.

- Maintain a clean and sterile environment in the dental operatory.

5. Administrative Duties:

- Schedule appointments and manage patient records.

- Handle billing and insurance-related tasks.

- Order dental supplies and equipment.

Nurse Duties in a Medical Setting:

1. Patient Assessment:

- Collect and document patient health histories, vital signs, and symptoms.

- Conduct routine physical exams and check for signs of illness or changes in condition.

- Coordinate and communicate patient care with the rest of the medical team.

2. Assisting with Procedures:

- Assist physicians and specialists during medical procedures, such as minor surgeries, diagnostic tests, or treatments.

- Administer medications and monitor patients for reactions or side effects.

3. Patient Education:

- Educate patients on disease prevention, management of chronic conditions, and post-operative care.

- Provide instructions on medications, treatments, and lifestyle changes.

4. Infection Control and Safety:

- Follow protocols for sterilization, sanitation, and infection control to prevent hospital-acquired infections.

- Ensure patient safety, including monitoring for any complications post-procedure.

5. Administrative and Support Roles:

- Maintain patient records, update charts, and ensure all information is accurate and complete.

- Schedule follow-up appointments or tests as required by physicians.

- Handle insurance documentation and billing for medical services.

6. Emergency Care:

- Respond to medical emergencies (e.g., CPR, administering oxygen, or assisting in trauma care).

- Assist with the management of critical patients or those in the intensive care unit (ICU).

In both settings, nurses play a critical role in patient care, promoting safety, comfort, and effective communication between the patient and healthcare team. Their work is essential to smooth operations, whether it's in the dental chair or a hospital room.
