Arup is a leader in the rail industry, and we have identified the following Associate Director opportunity to lead Rail and Metro projects and to support the regional portfolio leader to develop our Rail portfolio in the Middle East.


The Role



The successful candidate will Project Director/Manager for large rail and metro projects, focusing on the technical delivery and commercial success of projects. You will be presenting at client meetings, winning new work, reviewing the work and steering the delivery of that work. You will ensure that legal, commercial and project risk and project selection risk are well understood and managed in the team, and support the development of and implementation of a forward-thinking strategic Business Plan for Transport portfolio and in particular the Rail sector across the Middle East region, ensuring consistency with the UKIMEA Regional Strategy.



Key responsibilities include:


• Working as part of the Middle East Transport Engineering leadership team, developing and implementing the strategy and vision for Metros and Rail across the Middle East, supporting greater integration of Arup's work across the region and beyond.
• Expanding the Rail and Metros business' capabilities through selective recruitment to support the objectives of the Middle East office plan.
• Maintaining positive relationships with key regional clients and emphasising client focus with the team.
• Keeping up to date with market developments, anticipating market changes, and assessing opportunities for the expansion of services.
• Maintaining close relationships with key stakeholders on major rail and metro projects operating in the Middle East region. Identify their strategic project priorities in order to position Arup for future work.
• Developing a positive industry profile in this market for Arup
• Developing, mentoring and coaching staff, ensuring that new team skills are developed in relation to new market opportunities.
• Promoting and encouraging excellence and quality of work in all activities performed by the Transport Engineering team.


Skills and Qualifications


• A passion for, and technical understanding of, some or all: Major infrastructure projects; Deep basements, underground metro stations and other underground structures; Ground engineering in an urban environment
• Degree or preferably Masters equivalent qualification in civil engineering
• Chartered Civil Engineer and a valid Engineering registration through the relevant government agencies in Dubai and/or Abu Dhabi.


Essential skills, knowledge and behaviours


• Comfortable developing, winning and leading the delivery of new Rail and Metros work and overseeing diverse teams on projects.
• Proven successful commercial, operational and business capability.
• Substantial knowledge and experience in Metros and wider Rail industry
• A strong professional profile, reputation and active client network in the industry.
• An awareness and interest in major transport issues, emerging priorities and critical issues, as part of a wider transport sector
• Track record of looking forward and anticipating future issues which will affect clients, combined with the ability to translate this information into consultancy projects.
• Proven experience of successful management and developing the skills of multi-disciplinary and major projects
• Understanding of the economic aspects, funding aspects, planning issues and business benefits of rail and metro projects.
• Comfortable working in a matrix management organisation.
