A Quantity Surveyor for steel fabrication is a specialized role within the construction and engineering industries, focusing on estimating, costing, and managing financial aspects related to steel fabrication projects. This includes the design, fabrication, and erection of steel structures, such as beams, columns, and other components used in construction.
Key Responsibilities:
• Cost Estimation and Budgeting:
• Prepare detailed cost estimates for steel fabrication projects based on design drawings, specifications, and material requirements.
• Calculate quantities of steel required, along with other materials (e.g., bolts, nuts, welding materials) and labor.
• Produce cost plans and budgets, ensuring that projects are financially viable and within budget.
• Tendering and Procurement:
• Prepare and issue tenders to suppliers and subcontractors for steel materials, fabrication, and erection.
• Review bids and negotiate contracts with suppliers, ensuring the best value for money while maintaining quality.
• Contract Administration:
• Manage and track project costs throughout the lifecycle, including monitoring the progress and ensuring that the work stays within budget.
• Oversee variations, change orders, and claims to ensure accurate documentation and settlement of costs.
• Coordinate with clients, contractors, and suppliers to resolve any disputes or financial issues that arise.
• Quantity Take-off and Measurement:
• Take-off quantities of steel members and other materials from construction drawings, determining material requirements for fabrication.
• Perform measurement and valuation of completed work, ensuring proper invoicing and payment.
• Value Engineering:
• Propose cost-effective alternatives or design modifications to reduce material waste or enhance project efficiency.
• Identify opportunities for cost savings without compromising quality, safety, or structural integrity.
• Project Monitoring and Reporting:
• Prepare regular progress reports, detailing the financial status of the project, including any cost overruns, delays, or issues.
• Forecast potential future costs and advise on strategies to manage budget variations.
• Collaboration with Design and Engineering Teams:
• Work closely with engineers, architects, and fabricators to ensure that designs are feasible and cost-effective.
• Review project drawings and plans for discrepancies or errors that may affect cost and feasibility.
Skills Required:
• Strong Knowledge of Steel Fabrication Processes: Understanding of steel construction techniques, fabrication processes, and the associated costs.
• Advanced Excel and Software Proficiency: Ability to use spreadsheets and software tools (e.g., CostX, Bluebeam, or similar) for cost estimation, quantity takeoff, and project tracking.
• Attention to Detail: Ensuring that all aspects of the project are accurately costed and that no errors occur in quantity take-offs.
• Negotiation and Communication Skills: Engaging effectively with suppliers, subcontractors, and stakeholders, ensuring that financial terms are understood and adhered to.
• Time Management: Ensuring the project is delivered within the set budget and timeframe.
Qualifications and Experience:
• A degree in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
• Experience working on steel fabrication or structural steel projects.
• Familiarity with building codes, health and safety standards, and industry regulations.
