A Quantity Surveyor (QS) specializing in road and bridge construction manages all costs related to civil engineering projects, from the initial calculations to the final figures. They ensure that projects are completed within budget while meeting the required standards and quality. This role involves preparing cost estimates, budgets, and work schedules specifically for road and bridge projects, as well as ensuring compliance with legal and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
• Cost Planning and Estimation:
• Prepare detailed cost estimates, budgets, and cash flow forecasts for road and bridge projects.
• Conduct feasibility studies to estimate materials, time, and labor costs specific to road and bridge construction.
• Price/forecast the cost of different materials needed for the project, such as asphalt, concrete, steel, and other relevant materials.
• Contract Administration and Management:
• Prepare tender and contract documents, including bills of quantities for road and bridge projects.
• Negotiate and analyze costs for tenders and contracts with a focus on infrastructure projects.
• Ensure all contractual and legislative requirements are met, particularly those related to civil engineering and transportation infrastructure.
• Project Management:
• Monitor project costs to ensure the budget is not exceeded.
• Conduct regular site visits, assessments, and valuations specifically for road and bridge construction sites.
• Measure and value the work done on-site, ensuring alignment with project specifications and standards.
• Risk Management:
• Identify, analyze, and develop responses to commercial risks associated with road and bridge construction.
• Manage project risks and implement risk management strategies tailored to infrastructure projects.
• Reporting and Documentation:
• Prepare and present detailed progress reports specific to road and bridge projects.
• Maintain comprehensive documentation for all projects, ensuring accuracy and compliance with industry standards.
• Client Liaison:
• Work closely with clients, contractors, architects, and other project stakeholders in the road and bridge construction sector.
• Provide advice on contractual claims and disputes, particularly those related to civil engineering projects.
• Procurement and Supply Chain:
• Source and procure materials and subcontractor services specifically for road and bridge construction.
• Manage supplier and subcontractor relationships to ensure quality and cost-effectiveness for infrastructure projects.
Skills and Qualifications:
• Education: Bachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
• Certification: Professional certification such as MRICS (Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) or equivalent is highly desirable.
• Experience: Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor or in a similar role in road and bridge construction.
• Technical Skills:
• Proficiency in cost estimating software and tools.
• Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and legal regulations specific to road and bridge construction.
• Excellent mathematical and analytical skills.
