The Department of International Studies at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Associate to support ongoing research on Chinese migration into the Arab Gulf region. Working closely with the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Yuting Wang, the Postdoctoral Associate will contribute to data collection, analysis, and management of research projects focused on understanding the experiences and dynamics of Chinese expatriate communities. This 12-month position, starting in either January or June 2025, offers a unique opportunity to engage in research in the field of migration studies, contributing to academic publications and policy-relevant insights.Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities
Collaborate with the PI to design and conduct both quantitative and qualitative research studies. Gather primary and secondary data, including surveys, interviews and archival materials, related to Chinese expatriate communities in the Gulf region.
Utilize advanced statistical software to perform comprehensive data analysis.
Contribute to the preparation of research manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences.
Assist in the planning, execution, and monitoring of research activities. Participate in regular project meetings and support the PI in developing research grant proposals.
Offer guidance and support to graduate students working on related projects. Share expertise in research methodologies and statistical software with junior team members.
Coordinate project-related activities, manage timelines, and oversee the documentation of research progress. Provide logistical support for fieldwork or outreach activities when necessary.
Qualifications and Skills Required
PhD in Sociology or a related field from an accredited institution.
Evidence of a solid academic background in migration studies, diasporic studies, or related research areas.
Strong proficiency in data analysis using major statistical software. Ability to independently design and implement statistical models for complex research questions.
Proficiency in designing and conducting qualitative studies, including semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and coding of qualitative data using software (such as NVivo or Atlas.ti).
Proven ability to write high-quality research papers, reports, and presentations. Effective verbal communication skills for engaging with diverse stakeholders, including academic audiences and community members.
Experience in managing research timelines, coordinating fieldwork, and overseeing data collection processes.
In-depth understanding of key theories, frameworks, and methodologies in the study of migration and expatriate communities, particularly in the context of the Gulf region.
Preferred Experience Required
Proven track record of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed journals.
