KU is seeking a highly motivated Post-doctoral Fellow to assist in the development of simulation tools for Hall effect thrusters (HETs). The objective is to build computer-assisted design tools to optimize and predict the performance of different combinations of HET architectures and propellants in the thrust range from 5 mN to 140 mN. These designs will provide electric propulsion capability to Cubesats, enabling formation flying and orbit keeping, in addition to lunar and interplanetary missions.
The successful applicant will support the effort by developing a performance database of existing HET designs. This data will then be used to train a reduced-order model based on Machine Learning techniques. This approximate model will narrow down the design space allowing further optimization with more accurate HET physics-based models and high-fidelity LT trajectory optimization algorithms.
The candidate will work alongside research scientists and faculty of the Astrodynamics group of the Aerospace Engineering Department.
Qualifications
Minimum 2 years of experience in optimization of interplanetary trajectories with electric propulsion and multiple gravity-assist maneuvers.
Strong background in astrodynamics, celestial mechanics and numerical simulation.
Knowledge in the broader area of spacecraft and space mission design.
Adhere to the University\'s information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly
Perform any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager
PhD from a reputable university in Aerospace Engineering or related discipline.
Experience writing scientific or review papers;
A willingness to contribute to a collaborative and supportive team culture
Excellent English language communication skills (verbal and written)
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
