Position Summary

The position is responsible for leading the development and implementation of the EHSS program for the college.

Job Responsibilities

Leads risk assessments to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control potential workplace threats and hazards and implements risk mitigation measures. Reviews protocols, plans, and provides technical advice, training, and simulations to ensure safety and well-being across the college. Leads inspection and ensures compliance with college policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and best management practices. Conducts ongoing review, develops and updates all EHS plans, guidelines, equipment, inventory, policies, procedures, plans and EHSS metrics. Works with Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to provide support in EHS areas. Updates chemical inventories for teaching laboratories, conducts environmental monitoring in anatomy laboratory and ensures hazardous waste collection is managed as per permits. Collaborates with internal teams, providing support for the project management and builds effective partnerships with staff, faculty, and students throughout the college providing information and assistance as needed. Collaborates with the WCM-Q community, Qatar Foundation, QF HSSE personnel, QF Security personnel and contracts on matters related to EHSS. Oversees all security planning on the campus and events, manages the security personnels deployed ensuring security coverage across the campus. Ensures all injuries, incidents, fire alarm and other security incidents, evaluation measures and respective corrective actions and EHSS metrics are reported. Leads the Emergency Preparedness Program including administration of the emergency communication system, use of AED and evacuation chairs. Develops and implements plans for response and recovery from emergency situations. Serves as incident manager (Fire Warden) as part of the emergency team. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health and Safety or related discipline with 7 - 8 years of experience in general environmental health, safety, and security. Previous environmental health and safety experience in a research, hospital or medical education environment is highly desirable. The achievement of one or more of the following professional certifications or equivalents is desirable: Registered or Certified Biological Safety Professional, ABSA International. Certified Hazardous Material Manager, Institute of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers. Certified Safety Professional, Board of Certified Safety Professionals. Certified Industrial Hygienist, American Board of Industrial Hygiene. Certified Health Physicist (CHP), American Board of Health Physics. Completing Basic Life Support (CPR/AED) and First Aid courses is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough understanding of safety and environmental management system (e.g., OSHAS 18000 and /or ISO14001). Through knowledge of Qatar based EHS compliance and safety measures. Thorough knowledge of biosafety, chemical hygiene, and radiation protection program. Diligent and an ability to conduct inspections and seek ways for continual improvement. Ability to think critically and sound decision making skills. Ability to work in a multicultural environment. Proficient in English and Arabic (preferred). Advanced proficiency in MS Office suite of products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

The work is performed in modern office and in a medical teaching and research environment including laboratories. Working weekends and evenings as required. Participates in Emergency Response program. Responds to assist with emergencies during non-business hours and is available on cellular phone. Occasional exposure to unpleasant elements, such as hazardous materials and heat, making conditions less comfortable than usual office environment. Must be able to use WCM-Q supplied safety equipment weighing up to fifty pounds. Must be capable of utilizing respiratory protection equipment, including negative-pressure respirators. The incumbent will be expected to work in a non-office environment at times, where s/he may be required to enter crawl spaces, climb ladders, or review building systems.

Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar was established in 2001 as a partnership between Cornell University and Qatar Foundation (QF).
