The Organic Chemistry Lab Specialist aids the Scientist and Senior Scientist with the wastewater monitoring laboratory's analytical testing requirements as well as the interpretation of scientific data of moderate to difficult complexity. The organic chemistry lab specialist works with technicians to prepare samples and submit batches on the equipment. He or she will assist scientists with routine analysis and instrument maintenance workflows.
Comply with all safety, health, and quality control programs and procedures as applicable. Maintain the strictest confidence about sensitive information whether formally or informally recorded.Assist in the creation and maintenance of a research and innovation agenda and roadmap to support the business needs of laboratory wastewater monitoring.As part of the Scientific team, support compliance with regulatory and external Party Governance policies.Assist with the design planning and analysis of experimental protocols.Work with the laboratory and guide the identification, development, optimization, and ongoing competency of organic chemistry test methods, in conjunction with the Lead Chemist.Implement Standard Operating Procedures that are compliant with the policies of the organization.Identify quality indicators for meaningful monitoring and trending laboratory test results to be included in dashboards for decision-makers.Consider risk assessment in decision-making processesGuide Laboratory technicians in operating analytical equipment (e.g. chromatographs, spectrometers), ensuring that is calibrated and always maintained, and carrying out itsMaintenance of equipment according to the manufacturers instructions.Ensure that equipment is used correctly to obtain optimum results, perform basic troubleshooting of technical problems should they arise, and inform the line manager of equipment malfunction.Approve test results obtained by Laboratory Technicians.Support the Senior Scientist and Lead in interpreting test results and advising the Stakeholders in the decision-making process.Participate in stock control and management of reagents, consumables, standards, etcParticipate in training and education sessions for department staff i.e. induction, technical training, mentorship, etcComplete and maintain all regulatory requirements, such as licensing and certification, where applicable and within established time frames.Maintain professional knowledge by attending lectures, seminars, or online education units.Apply statistical tools, to analyze data and identify root causes and problem resolution.Identify and recommend opportunities for continuous improvement (internal/external).Comply with training requirements including personal development.Train and develop technical personnel Perform other duties related to the work environment as directed by management.Complies with all ISO17025 requirements and Laboratory quality management systemComply with quality control programs and procedures as applicable.Follow SOPs and Best Laboratory PracticesParticipate in Proficiency testing, Blind testing, or any other laboratory quality controlPromote and maintain quality in all services, ensure continuous quality improvement measures are in place, follow SOPs and Best Practices as instructed in the relevant laboratory documents, and ensure that SOPs and Quality Assurance tests are maintainedParticipate in activities aimed at improving the quality of workflows and processes or improving parts of existing protocols.Comply with training requirements including personal development.Comply with and support audit processes, reporting on these when directed to do so.Participate in and undertake an audit (External and Internal)Participate in Health and Safety activitiesParticipate in Risk and Hazard identificationComplies with the RASID Health and Safety requirementsResponsible for risk assessments in the area of responsibilityQualifications
Bachelor degree or masters degree in Analytical Chemistry with specialization in Organic Chemistry or other relevant science or engineering discipline.
Understand and apply principles and practices of in organic chemistry dealing with wastewater analysis.Implement standard organic chemistry laboratory concepts, practices, and procedures.Develop and validate analytical test methods and instrumentation for water and wastewater analysis techniques according to Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater.Work safely in a hazardous environment with potential exposure to toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, radioactive, and other tissue-destructive chemicals, bacterial cultures, wastewater, and physical hazards.Experience with sample extraction instruments like SPE manifolds, Liquid-Liquid extraction techniquesExperience with organic method techniques and quality control requirements for recognizing international standards (EPA)for testing OCPs, PCBs, VOCs, SVOCs, PAHs PPCP, Steroid Hormones, Illicit drugs).A minimum of five (5) years of experience working in a Chemistry lab environment, ideally in water or wastewater treatment.Minimum Two years of experience as an Organic Chemistry Scientist.Work experience with liquid chromatographic systems like HPLC & UPLC and mass Spectrometer (MS) instruments.Sample preparation for organic chemistry analysis, such as SPE, LLE, SPME, SPME-trap, Headspace-trap, and Thermal desorption techniques.Knowledge of statistical methods for data analysis.Use of equipment software and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)Familiarity with Microsoft Office (primarily Excel, PowerPoint, and Word).Principles and practices of organic chemistry wastewater analysis.Standard organic chemistry laboratory concepts, practices & procedures.The theory, method development, and validation of analytical test methods and instrumentation for standard methods for water and wastewater analysis techniques for aggregate organic constituents and individual organic compounds as per Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater.Best practices for method and result data handling and information management.Best practices for Quality Assurance and Quality Control of test methods and processes.Principles and applications of statistics.What we look for:If you are a performance-driven, inquisitive mind with the agility to adapt to ambiguity, you will fit right in.
