Here are the typical responsibilities of a heavy mechanic:
Diagnosis and Repair: Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, including trucks, buses, construction machinery, and agricultural equipment. Use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify problems and develop repair solutions.
Routine Maintenance: Perform scheduled maintenance tasks such as oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, and fluid checks to prevent breakdowns and ensure optimal performance. Follow maintenance schedules and service intervals specified by manufacturers.
Engine Overhaul: Disassemble, inspect, and rebuild engines, transmissions, and other major components to restore performance and reliability. Replace worn or damaged parts, reassemble components, and test functionality to verify proper operation.
Brake and Suspension Systems: Inspect, repair, and replace brake pads, rotors, drums, calipers, and hydraulic components to maintain braking performance and safety. Service suspension systems, including springs, shocks, and steering components, to ensure stability and control.
Electrical Systems: Repair and replace electrical components, wiring harnesses, starters, alternators, and batteries to address electrical malfunctions and ensure proper system operation. Diagnose and repair lighting, ignition, and charging system issues.
Hydraulic Systems: Service hydraulic systems, including pumps, valves, cylinders, hoses, and fittings, to maintain hydraulic fluid levels, pressure, and flow rates. Troubleshoot hydraulic leaks, malfunctions, and failures to restore system functionality.
Welding and Fabrication: Perform welding, cutting, and fabrication tasks to repair metal components, frames, and structures. Use welding equipment and techniques to join and reinforce metal parts, panels, and assemblies.
Safety Inspections: Conduct safety inspections and pre-trip inspections of heavy equipment to identify potential hazards, defects, or regulatory violations. Ensure compliance with safety standards, regulations, and manufacturer specifications.
