Purpose of the Role:
The primary role of the Head of Department (HOD) for MOE Subjects is to provide leadership focused on learning. This involves leading, managing, and developing learning within the department to ensure students achieve remarkable learning outcomes.
Key Accountabilities:
Outlined are the essential responsibilities of the HOD for MOE Subjects, including raising the quality of student learning, raising standards of teaching, meeting targets in lesson observations and feedback, and managing departmental resources effectively.
• Understand the definition of learning and be able to communicate this to others.
• Observe lessons and identify learning in terms of knowledge, skills, and understanding.
• Be able to identify good and bad struggles in learning.
• Be able to provide learning-focused feedback to help others achieve amazing learning.
• Create a learning-focused action plan to contribute to the overall school improvement plan.
• Teach or co-teach at least 3-4 lessons each week.
Main Duties:
Operational/Strategic Planning:
• Evaluate learning and ensure conducive conditions for learning.
• Actively monitor student progress and implement learning-focused policies.
Curriculum:
• Collaborate to evaluate and deliver a relevant, learning-focused curriculum that meets student needs.
Staff Development:
• Recruit, deploy, and develop staff.
• Conduct performance reviews and provide meaningful feedback.
Quality Assurance:
• Establish learning-focused targets, observe lessons, identify learning, and ensure all decisions are focused on learning.
Management of Information:
• Maintain accurate learning-related information, collect and analyze data, and ensure effective communication.
Communications:
• Disseminate learning-related information, represent department views, and foster effective communication with stakeholders.
Management of Resources:
• Efficiently manage physical resources, staff, and timetables to support learning.
Student Care:
• Safeguard students, implement behavior management systems, and support student development.
Teaching:
• Undertake teaching responsibilities, provide exemplary teaching, and contribute to the school community.
Other Specific Duties:
• Play a full part in the school community.
• Continue personal professional development.
• Comply with health and safety policies.
• Undertake additional duties as specified.
