The Center for Arabic Studies and Islamic Civilization (CASIC) at American University of Sharjah (AUS), United Arab Emirates, invites applications for a full-time CASIC faculty Director position. The successful candidate will have a specialization in a relevant field of Arabic studies, Islamic civilization, or a closely related discipline, broadly defined and will hold a faculty appointment in one of the relevant departments. The Director will report directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and collaborate with the university leadership to align the centers activities with institutional and national priorities.The CASIC leverages AUSs strong expertise across academic disciplines to promote innovative, multidisciplinary research on the cultural continuity and diversity of the Arab and Islamic worlds. CASIC aligns its research objectives with key Sharjah and UAE priorities, emphasizing the study of the Arabic language, heritage, history, and cultures of the Arab and Islamic worlds. Situated at the heart of the Arab and Islamic worlds, CASIC at AUS benefits from a unique position enriched by cultural influences from both the East and the West, providing a counterpoint to Western approaches to studying the Arab world and Islamic civilization. CASIC adopts a comprehensive approach to addressing matters of importance to the Arab and Islamic worlds.CASIC will leverage the cross-disciplinary expertise at AUS to conduct in-depth, innovative research on the regions history, cultures, arts, contemporary dynamics, and diasporas. Its work will focus on cultural heritage, arts, and architecture; language, literature, and media studies; humanities, performing arts, and visual communication; economy, society, and the digital age. The center aspires to establish a unique position among similar institutions by reorienting the study of the Arab world and Islamic civilization both regionally and globally. To achieve this, CASIC seeks to recruit a Director with extensive knowledge and expertise in the culture, history, and contemporary realities of the Arab and Islamic worlds. Proficiency in Islamicate languages is desirable. The director will be responsible for shaping the centers long-term strategy by setting clear priorities and fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and meaningful impact. The center aims to drive research programs that incorporate the extensive scholarly traditions from within the Arab and Islamic Civilizations with contemporary approaches, with special emphasis on their application to addressing the needs of modern UAE society, the Arab region, and the wider world.AUS offers educational programs that align with and support the activities and goals of CASIC. These programs provide strength in Arabic and Translation Studies, the History and Culture of the Arab World, Islamic Arts and Architecture, Philosophy, Middle Eastern Studies, the Politics and Economy of the Arab World, and Arab Media, Visual Communication, and Performing Arts. CASIC will serve as a central hub, uniting expertise from within AUS and engaging with local and international stakeholders to address cultural and societal issues. The center aims to foster partnerships highlighting Arab and Islamic contributions to global heritage. The center will collaborate closely with organizations such as the Sharjah Art Foundation, the Sharjah Museums Authority, the Sharjah Arabic Language Academy, and others.The centers leadership will set clear and achievable goals, steering it toward becoming a globally recognized leader in the study of Arab and Islamic civilizations. This will allow CASIC to play a pivotal role in elevating AUSs research profile, positioning the university as a regional and global thought leader. Particular focus will, therefore, be placed on disseminating knowledge, building strategic partnerships with local and international institutions and researchers, and fostering academic collaborations to achieve broad impact. Furthermore, CASIC will invest in talent development by supporting graduate student research, post-doctoral fellowships, and visiting scholars.Faculty Director candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant field at the time of appointment. The candidate must demonstrate a record of excellent academic and research leadership and ideally possess significant administrative experience in managing interdisciplinary research centers or academic units. The successful candidate must demonstrate deep expertise in securing competitive research grants, managing multidisciplinary teams, and contributing to high-impact journals in relevant fields.
