In the intensive care unit (ICU), nurses play a vital role in providing comprehensive care to critically ill patients. Here\'s an overview of their responsibilities:
Monitoring Patients: Continuously monitor patients\' vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and respiratory rate. Assess patients\' neurological status, level of consciousness, and response to treatments.
Administering Medications: Administer medications as prescribed by physicians, including intravenous medications, sedatives, analgesics, and vasopressors. Monitor patients for adverse reactions and side effects.
Implementing Ventilator Management: Manage mechanical ventilation for patients requiring respiratory support. Adjust ventilator settings based on patients\' respiratory status and arterial blood gas analysis. Perform routine ventilator checks and troubleshoot ventilator alarms.
Performing Procedures: Assist physicians with bedside procedures, such as central venous catheter insertion, arterial line placement, endotracheal intubation, and chest tube insertion. Ensure aseptic technique and patient safety during procedures.
Providing Nursing Care: Provide comprehensive nursing care, including turning and repositioning patients to prevent pressure ulcers, maintaining hygiene and skin integrity, and assisting with activities of daily living.
Monitoring Equipment: Monitor and troubleshoot equipment in the ICU, such as cardiac monitors, infusion pumps, ventilators, and intra-aortic balloon pumps. Ensure equipment functionality and report any malfunctions promptly.
Collaborating with Interdisciplinary Team: Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, nutritionists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans for patients. Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and communicate patient status updates.
Providing Emotional Support: Offer emotional support and reassurance to patients and their families during times of crisis. Facilitate communication between patients, families, and healthcare providers to address concerns and provide information.
Assessing and Documenting: Perform comprehensive assessments of patients\' physical and mental status, documenting findings accurately and timely in the electronic medical record. Monitor and document intake and output, laboratory values, and response to treatments.
