: HVAC Technician (Chilled Water Systems)

Position Overview

An HVAC Technician specializing in chilled water systems is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and cooling systems that use chilled water technology. The technician will ensure optimal system performance to meet client requirements while adhering to safety and efficiency standards.

Key ResponsibilitiesSystem Installation

Install chilled water air conditioning systems, including chillers, cooling towers, air handling units (AHUs), and fan coil units (FCUs). Connect piping, pumps, and other components necessary for the chilled water system. Interpret and work from blueprints, technical diagrams, and schematics to complete installations.

Maintenance and Repair

Conduct preventive maintenance on chillers, cooling towers, AHUs, and associated components to ensure operational efficiency. Troubleshoot and repair issues related to pumps, compressors, expansion valves, and heat exchangers. Inspect and maintain insulation, ductwork, and water piping for leaks and proper performance. Monitor and maintain refrigerant levels and perform necessary adjustments.

System Monitoring and Diagnostics

Use diagnostic tools, such as pressure gauges and temperature meters, to evaluate system performance. Monitor chilled water supply and return temperatures to ensure optimal efficiency. Perform water quality testing and ensure compliance with chemical treatment requirements.

Operational Optimization

Balance and adjust chilled water flow rates to ensure proper system operation. Identify and implement energy-saving measures to optimize system performance. Perform system retrofits and upgrades as necessary.

Compliance and Safety

Adhere to local building codes and safety regulations in all installations and repairs. Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safety protocols. Maintain detailed service records, reports, and compliance documentation.

Client Interaction

Communicate effectively with clients to explain system issues, provide recommendations, and answer questions. Deliver timely service to minimize downtime and maintain customer satisfaction.

Skills and Qualifications

Technical Skills:

Extensive knowledge of chilled water systems, including chillers, AHUs, FCUs, cooling towers, and related components. Proficiency in working with various refrigerants and HVAC tools. Familiarity with building management systems (BMS) and control systems for chilled water setups.

Experience:

Minimum 3-5 years of experience in HVAC systems with a focus on chilled water systems. Hands-on experience in installation, maintenance, and repair.

Certifications:

HVAC certification or diploma in mechanical engineering or a related field. EPA refrigerant handling certification (preferred). Additional training in water treatment for chilled water systems is a plus.

Soft Skills:

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Excellent communication and teamwork abilities. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Work Environment

Primarily work on commercial and industrial properties. May involve working in confined spaces, on rooftops, or in other challenging environments. Regular lifting, bending, and climbing ladders may be required.

Additional Requirements for Chilled Water Systems

Familiarity with

variable frequency drives (VFDs)

and their application in chilled water systems. Knowledge of chilled water loop balancing and hydraulic calculations. Experience in

thermal storage systems

or district cooling applications (preferred). Ability to diagnose and address cavitation or flow issues in chilled water pumps.
